Sherlock Holmes ~ Granada
- Topics
- Sherlock Holmes, Watson, Arthur Conan Doyle
Sherlock Holmes is the name given to the TV series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations produced by British television company Granada Television between 1984 and 1994, with the first two series bearing the title The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes on screen and being followed by subsequent sub-series bearing the titles of the other short story collections by Arthur Conan Doyle. The series was broadcast on the ITV network in the UK and starred Jeremy Brett as the famous detective. His portrayal remains very popular and is accepted by some as the definitive on-screen version of Sherlock Holmes.
In addition, Holmes's faithful friend and companion Dr. Watson is portrayed as the kind of thoroughly competent sidekick that Holmes would want. Initially, Watson was portrayed by David Burke (who had earlier played the villain in an adaptation of "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet" for the 1965 BBC series starring Douglas Wilmer and Nigel Stock). Burke appeared in the first year of the Adventures series before leaving to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was replaced by Edward Hardwicke, who played Watson for the remainder of the run.

Jeremy Brett and whole Granada Team is to be appreciated for regenerating and recreating the era and making it come live, as it must have been imagined by Arthur Conan Doyle...it was and will remain the best by performance, direction and Location wise

thank you for uploading this great series.
sadly Jeremy Brett passed away from heart disease and bipolar manic depression, which he suffered from most of his adult life;
the cardboard box was his last appearance. he had to be hospitalized several times and passed out several times and oxygen and and a nurse on set were needed
Jeremy was so multifaceted, especially in the theatre which he so loved.......you can see alot of his early work on youtube.
He passed away in his sleep on September 12 1995 at the age of 61............May he now rest in peace

We had bought a season of it, which was all we could find at the time. We had to have more! No one could ever be Sherlock again after seeing Jeremy Brett's mastery of the role. He was the best and I loved watching him. I look forward to watching all of these - Thank you so much for making them available!

Subject: The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes
I've been a fan of Sherlock Holmes for many years in his various guises including Basil Rathbone, Doulas Wilmer, Peter Cushing, Ian Richardson etc. I've also loved the different types of Holmes such as Peter Cook, Michael Caine & Benedict Cumberbatch. I ignored the stupid versions by Jonny Lee Miller and Will Ferrell because they were awful! But, in my honest opinion, the best ever Holmes, and the nearest to the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle interpretation was Jeremy Brett. He was magnificent but was ably supported by David Burke, Edward Hardwicke, Charles Gray, Rosalie Williams and Colin Jeavons.
